そこで待機者リストに載っていた私の両親は夜中に電話を受け、「望んでいなかった男の子が生まれました。この子を養子に欲しいですか？」と聞かれた。 - They said, “Of course." My biological mother found out later that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers.

- be honored to…（…を光栄に思う）という意味の表現。
📘honor：名詞はDUOの例文#433で説明済み
- commencementは「開始」「卒業式」「学位授与式」等の意味を持つ名詞。米国では一般的に卒業式のことを、graduationではなくcommencementを使うらしい。元々の意味は「始まり」ということ。諸説あるが「新しい人生の始まり」「プロフェショナルな人生の始まり」といったニュアンスから「卒業式」という意味につながっているらしい。余談になるが、ポルトガル語でstartに相当する単語はcomeçarなので、この辺りの知識がある人は理解しやすいと思う。
- finestはfineの最上級でベストということ。fineは語根fin（終わり）を持っており「最後まできちんとやり遂げる」というイメージ。ここから、仕上げられたといったニュアンスが生じる。

📘graduate from…：DUOの例文#335で説明済 - I got close to a college graduation（卒業の近くに行った）という文章のcloseを最上級にして、This is…という形にすればThis is the closest that I got to a college graduation（これが最も卒業の近くに行った）となる。加えて「これまで生きてきた中で」となるため、現在完了にすれば、This is the closest that I’ve ever gotten to a college graduationとなり、thatを省略すれば原文となる。

- put…up for adoptionで「…を養子に出す」ということ。adoption（養子）にfor（向かって）して「…を上に置く」ということ。イメージすれば下図のような感じ。なお、adoptionはDUOの例文423で出てくるadopt（養子に取る）の名詞形。decide（決める）のニュアンスも再確認するとよい。

- college graduatesで「大卒者たち」という意味。複数形なので養父母が両方とも大卒であるということ。そのため、実母は養父母両方とも大卒の人を求めていたということ。
- except that (when I popped out), they decided (at the last minute) that they really wanted a girl.といった具合に括弧を除けば「本当は女の子が欲しいと決めたことを除いて」という大意が読み取れる。
- at the last minuteで「土壇場で」という意味の表現。覚えておくと便利な表現。He cancelled at the last minute（彼はドタキャンした）といった具合に日常でも使える。

- who were on a waiting listは非制限用法で「順番待ちリストに載っている」という意味。非制限用法についてはDUOの例文に多々出てくるが、同じwhoを使っている388辺りが参考になると思う。
- have got…は意味としては「…を入手した」ということ。口語ではhaveの後に頻繁にgotが入ることが多々ある。文法的に考えれば「入手した状態を持っている」となるので、gotを入れることで「入手という変化」を強調しているのだと思う。
